Both were killed as the enemies came at them separately. Later, he finds out he can go back in time to before he was born and undo death. However, he alone recalled the events that had transpired after that.

Subaru survives a horrible end and is reunited with his love, Emilia, but soon after he discovers that Rem has been obliterated from existence by the White Whale’s Fog of Elimination while they were in the midst of his death circle.

Subaru and Emilia must now face a future they never anticipated after the White Whale was destroyed.
